Letting Go Of Expectation
No one expected to be where we are right now. Who could have imagined we’d all be wearing masks and in lockdown, ordering goods online and settling for takeout with our memories of dining out fading fast? But this is the nature of life; we plan and God decides, as the saying goes.
For years, I resisted using spiritual language, including the word ‘God’ though I was raised in the United church and am fluent in Christianity. I preferred to say ‘universal love’ or even ‘divine wisdom’ but what I’ve come to realize is that the language is less important than my intention to co-create with what comes in each moment through willingness and acceptance of what is. I’ve spent too much time dwelling on what I don’t want, feeling afraid and uncertain rather than trusting myself to respond appropriately and create something beautiful for the world. When we commit to being truly present, our path appears beneath our feet and we are led to our own centre, to a place where we are connected to our soul’s purpose. If we let go of expectation, we’re free to play and to enjoy whatever comes.
In this time of Covid, where we are given the gift of a slower pace and time to reflect, ask yourself, where can I become more authentic in my approach to life? How can I make the most of the time I am given? To wake each day grateful for whatever unfolds, and to recognize that opinions of whether something is good (what we hoped for) or bad (something we resist) is a judgement made without all the information. To accept what is, and celebrate it, whatever it is, and to release all expectation of what ‘should’ be, is to work with the universe in an act of co-creation….perhaps something better than what you hoped for, perhaps something beyond your wildest dreams is about to become your enlightened new reality. Even if you don’t believe in ‘God’ you can believe in the power of your intention to make the most of whatever life brings. Even when it brings the unexpected, even when uncertainty reigns. Trust yourself, be authentic and open-hearted, trust you have everything you need to lead a rich and wonderful life, however unexpected it may be!
